Assimilation is essentially an analysis technique that fits a model to observed data. The model (in our case a numerical forecast model of the stratosphere and troposphere) provides a strong constraint to the analysis problem, i.e. the model ensures that the analysed fields are reasonably self-consistent. The UARS assimilation system has been developed from the new Met Office data assimilation scheme for operational weather forecasting. The forecast model at the heart of the assimilation system is capable of being run at many different resolutions. For the UARS project it will be configured so that its vertical coverage extends from the earth's surface to above the stratopause. The numerical model used in the assimilation system is a global primitive equation model, with a split-explicit time integration scheme. It incorporates a comprehensive range of physical parametrization schemes. It uses a hybrid vertical coordinate system, with terrain-following model levels at low levels, gradually changing to pressure levels in the stratosphere. The observations used as input to the assimilation are essentially the same as those used for operational weather forecasting i.e. the World Weather Watch network of surface and upper air observations and satellite data. Two sets of assimilated data will be available: 1) A correlative assimilation experiment will be run close to real time; this will just be based on the observations mentioned above. Fields from this experiment will be available on the Central Data Handling Facility (CDHF), to allow UARS investigators to check their retrievals against an independent analysis. These data will be available at the GSFC DAAC. 2) Experiments assimilating UARS data, in addition to the standard meteorological observations, will also be run. These will not form a continuous sequence, instead we will run different experiments to assimilate particular combinations of data from different instruments. The system will first be used to assimilate temperature data from ISAMS; next, wind measurements from HRDI will be assimilated. At a later stage, the system will also be used to assimilate chemical species (initially treating long-lived species as tracers). These data are not available at the GSFC DAAC. InvestigationObjectives: ------------------------ The primary goal of this work is the analysis of observations from a variety of different instruments for the UARS project. UARS products will be validated using the results from tha assimilations. The non-UARS assimilations will allow UARS retrievals to be compared with an independent set of analyses. Statistics gathered in an "observation processing dataset" will be used for further validation of UARS data (see section on DataSetQuality) The analysed fields will be used as the basis for diagnostic studies of the circulation of the middle atmosphere. InstrumentAttributes: --------------------- N/A MeasuredParameters: ------------------- Analysed fields will be produced for the following parameters: Temperature TEMP K Geopotential Height HEIGHT m Wind Components:- westerly ZONWIN_P m/s southerly MERWIN_P m/s Vertical velocity OMEGA Pa/s N.B. Vertical velocity is available in files dated 26th August 1992 onwards. The daily analysis files (12 UTC nominal time) contain OMEGA averaged between 0 UTC and 24 UTC. When UARS chemical data is also assimilated, fields containing volume mixing ratios of the appropriate species will also be included in the assimilated data. (To be advised). Analysed fields will be supplied to the CDHF for 12UTC each day throughout the period of the assimilation experiments and made available to the GSFC DAAC. For certain special periods, six-hourly analysed fields (at 0, 6, 12 and 18 UTC) may also be supplied. The horizontal resolution will follow that of the numerical model used in the assimilation system. That is, 2.5 degrees latitude by 3.75 degrees longitude, using a staggered grid system. For parameters other than wind components, each horizontal field consists of 73 rows of 96 points each, ordered North to South, West to East, starting at 90N, 0E. The wind grid is staggered by half a grid length, starting at 88.75N, 1.875E (with 72 rows). Vertical velocities are on the same grid as the wind components. Fields will be produced at UARS standard pressure levels (i.e. levels of the form 1000*10**-i/6 mb), from 1000 mb to 0.316 mb. (These fields will be vertically interpolated from the model data; currently the model has 42 levels, with a vertical resolution in the stratosphere of about 1.6 km). DataSetQuality: --------------- As part of the assimilation system an "Observation Processing Dataset" (OPD) will be compiled. This will contain Observation minus Background (O-B) and Observation minus Analysis (O-A) values at each observation location. The background values (B) are the best independent estimates of the observed parameters, as produced by forecast from the numerical model (i.e. excluding observations in the current assimilation cycle). The analysis values (A) are the analysed fields, again interpolated to the observation locations. The analysis A is essentially a weighted average of the local observations O and the background B, with the weights determined by the expected accuracy of O and B. Information from the OPD will be used in a number of ways to validate UARS observations. The mean and standard deviation of O-B values will be determined to identify any biases in the observations (or the model). Examination of histograms and scatter plots of O-B for observations passing and failing quality control checks will highlight any problems in the quality control procedures. Comparing O-A and O-B statistics for the same set of observations will indicate how much information is being extracted from the observations by the assimilation. The OPD statistics also have to potential to be used in the assessment of observations not included in the assimilation. The O-A statistics allow the over-all (root-mean-square) fit of the analysis to the observations to be quantified. For the observations we plan to use, this should allow a good estimate of the accuracy of the temperature analyses. However, it will be harder to assess the accuracy of the wind analyses, because there will be few (if any) observations to verify the analysed fields in the upper part of the stratosphere. Statistics showing the fit of the analyses to the observations are also output directly by the assimilation. Based on these statistics, estimates of the accuracy of analysed fields (eg. RMS observation minus analysis differences) will be supplied to the UARS science team. In due course, files containing these accuracy estimates may in the future be catalogued at the GSFC DAAC, so that the access routines will be able to return a quality estimate for the analyses in addition to the analysed values themselves. Subjective assessments of data quality are given using the "PI quality indicator" in the metadata files (*META extension), as shown below: 1.1 - Very poor - do not use this data; it has a major error(s). 1.2 - Poor - use it at your own risk; the analyses are known to have significant errors. 1.3 - Satisfactory - but known to have a minor problem; e.g. some satellite data were not available, or fields are noisier than usual. 1.4 - Good - reaches our usual high standard (but note that some some of the earlier analyses may not be as good as more recent files). The Comments field should explain a marking of 1.1 or 1.2 (and usually 1.3). In other cases the Comments field gives a short description of the assimilation run used to produce the analysis. Note that if the Quality Flag is null, or if it starts with 0., it indicates that the quality indicator for that analysis file has not yet been set. DataProcessingOverview: ----------------------- The assimilation system can be divide into five separate stages: 1. Transfer of observations to UK Met Office Cray 2. Observation pre-processing and quality control 3. Assimilation and forecast 4. Observation post-processing 5. Fields post-processing, including transfer to CDHF 6. Transfer of data to GSFC DAAC Each of these stages are outlined below. For standard meteorological data, stage 1 consists of the extraction of observations from the Met Office "Synoptic Data Bank" (SDB) or "Meteorological Data Bank" (MDB), and transfer of the data to the Cray using Superlink. If UARS observations are also to be assimilated, they are read from the level 3AT catalogued files, and converted to a format suitable for transfer to the Cray. The UARS data are first transferred to the Met Office IBM-compatible front-end system, and in turn to the Cray when they are required. In the second stage, observations from the SDB/MDB (or from UARS) are converted to a standard record format. The observed data are then quality controlled by comparing them with the equivalent model forecast values, and also with neighbouring observations. The observations are then assimilated into a numerical model of the atmosphere; while the model is being integrated forward in time the model fields are adjusted towards the appropriate observed values, to produce an "optimal" analysis of the data. The assimilation is followed by a forecast; data from this forecast are used in the quality control step of the next assimilation cycle. While the numerical model is running, it produces grid-point fields of analysed and forecast parameters. Fourthly, analysed fields (from stage 3) are interpolated to observation locations; this allows the observation minus analysis differences to be calculated. A sub-set of the data in the observation records are copied to an "Observation Processing Dataset", to allow subsequent statistical analysis of the performance of the assimilation system. In the fifth stage, fields produced by the assimilation are transferred to the IBM front-end system, and from there to the CDHF. Maps of the fields will be plotted to facilitate the monitoring of the experiments. The assimilated fields will be catalogued on the CDHF. Finally, the data files will be transferred from the CDHF to the GSFC DAAC for distribution to the user community. DataUsage: ---------- The main use of analyses from the correlative assimilation run is to provide an independent analysis for members of the UARS science team to compare with equivalent retrievals derived from UARS instruments. Analyses from assimilation experiments which include UARS data can be compared with the UARS level 3 data. This will show the influence of any additional observations which have been included in the assimilation (eg. from NOAA operational satellites), or the effect of dynamical constraints imposed via the numerical model of the atmsopheric circulation. It will also help to highlight any problems with the retrievals being assimilated; this can be quantified using the OPD statistics (see section on DataSetQuality).
