Ely Lockheed Palo Alto Research Laboratory Lockheed Missiles and Space Company Palo Alto, California INTRODUCTION ------------ The SFDU documentation for the CLAES data set is hierarchical (see below for other referenced SFDU's). This document describes the CLAES Level 2 data set. This set of data are contained in a single file of multiple records, each containing one primary science mode EMAF. These data are obtained from the CLAES level 1 radiance data and are on the CLAES altitude grid. These data include temperature, pressure, species mixing ratios, and aerosol absorption coefficient profiles. The data are the primary input to further processing using the CLAES Batch Data Processing Software (BDPS) on the UARS CDHF to produce the Level 3A data products listed in the associated SFDU's. FieldRange: The range of reasonable values is from 1 to 1320 UARS minutes. This is because a level 2 data file never spans more than one day. FieldRepresentation: INTEGER*4 FieldDisplayFormat: I5 FieldFillCode: N/A FieldMasks: N/A -***- FieldName: RET_DATTIM(2) FieldSyntax: Two scalar words make up this field. The first is a 5 digit integer of which the upper two digits define the last two digits of the year associated with processed level 2 data. The lower three digits of this 5 digit integer are a count of the number of days into that year. The second scalar word further time tags the day of the year by giving the number of elapsed milliseconds into that day. FieldUnits: The units of the three data within this two word field are year, days, and milliseconds respectively. FieldResolution: The measurement resolutions are exact. FieldRange: Allowable values for year are 91, 92, and 93. Day may vary from 1 to 366 depending on the year and the vehicle launch date. The number of milliseconds in a day cannot exceed 86400100. FieldDescription: This field defines the beginning time of the UARS engineering major frame (EMAF), ie., the universal time tag associated with the proces- sed level 2 data record. FieldRepresentation: Two INTEGER*4 words FieldDisplayFormat: Display using integer format widths no less than 6 and 9 respectively, ie., I6,I9. FieldFillCode: N/A FieldMasks: N/A -***- FieldName: UARS_DAY FieldSyntax: Scalar FieldUnits: The data is expressed in number of days. FieldResolution: Measurement resolution is exact. FieldRange: The range of reasonable values is from 0 to approximately 730 depending on the realized lifetime of the CLAES instrument's cryogenic cooler. FieldDescription: Specifies the number of days into the mission, ie., the number of days elapsed since launch.. FieldRepresentation: Integer*4 FieldDisplayFormat: I4 FieldFillCode: N/A FieldMasks: N/A -***- FieldName: ZRRETN(NLV2,IBLKMX) See Note #1. FieldSyntax: This field is doubly dimensioned. It is comprised of IBLKMX (9) contiguous arrays each containing NLV2 (27) real numbers. FieldUnits: All retrieved altitude mesh values are expressed in kilometers. FieldResolution: The major contribution to the error is abso- lute knowledge of instrument pointing. The instru- ment pointing will be calibrated by viewing selected stars in a deliberately unfocused mode such that the blurred image covers three or four detectors. The position of the star on the focal plane can then be derived to a small fraction of a detector. Using this information and the LAAM mirror position, the absolute altitude of the CLAES line of sight at the limb can then be derived to an accuracy within sev- eral hundred meters. FieldRange: The range of reasonable values is any real number greater than 8 and less than 100 kilometers. FieldDescription: Retrieved refraction corrected geodetic altitude mesh for each blocker. The locus of each altitude mesh is a line perpendicular to the CLAES instrument's line of sight (LOS) and located at the tangent point where the instrument's LOS (pinpointed at center of the main focal plane array between detectors 10 and 11) intersects the earth's limb at its minimum dis- tance from the earth's surface. IBLKMX is the number of blockers operational on the CLAES instrument. NLV2 is mesh on altitude which is used in all relevant level 2 data constructs. The 27 altitudes consist of 20 which coincide with the refraction corrected positions of the CLAES detector centers projected onto the limb. The remain- ing 7 are extrapolated positions and are made up of 5 high alti- tude boundary values above and 2 low altitude values below the 20. The profiles of temperature, pressure, extinction coefficient, and species ratios defined at the extrapolated altitude mesh points are also extrapolated boundary conditions selected to fit smoothly to the data reported by the 20 detectors of the CLAES main focal plane array. Note #2...N_CLAES_SPEC is a parameter currently defined as 13. This param- eter defines the number of different stratospheric gas species recorded in the level 2 data structure. With the exception of CO2, all of these are retrieved. The CO2 is a climatological model. These species and the blockers in operation when they are detected are listed below.
